WHITEHORSE—The Yukon government’s Film and Sound Commission is launching a pilot producer mentorship program to provide local film producers with knowledge and advice from experts in the field.
“The Government of Yukon is proud to respond to the needs of our local film industry by offering a mentorship opportunity that will advance Yukon film and media projects,” Minister of Economic Development Stacey Hassard said. “We are pleased to be working with the Yukon Film Society and Screen Production Yukon on this important initiative.”
The program offers up to 15 hours of mentorship that allows writers, directors and producers to access support as they complete funding applications, develop their business, or pitch projects to national and international markets.
“Outside expertise is incredibly valuable to emerging and established producers,” Screen Production Yukon board member and film business owner Jayden Soroka said. “The opportunity to call upon a seasoned producer and ask crucial questions that pertain to specific projects is a big step forward in building a sustainable industry in the North.”
The Yukon Film Society, Screen Production Yukon and the Film and Sound Commission will work together to pair mentors with local producers.
“Facilitating connections between emerging Yukon filmmakers and their more established peers both within and outside the territory is something we’ve always supported and encouraged,” Yukon Film Society artistic director Andrew Connors said. “A program like this has great potential to capitalize on the momentum that’s been building over the past decade and ensures that Yukon media artists have access to the resources they need to realize their creative potential.”
The program will accept applications until March 31. Once the pilot is completed, the Yukon Film and Sound Commission will review the outcomes to determine the future of the project.
